Every Pipe smokers know that pipes require regular maintenance. Dirty pipes, whether new or used, should be sanitized before use. Sterilizing a pipe is relatively easy and can be achieved by one of several methods.

For serious cleaning, a pipe retort kit is advisable. Without regular and diligent cleaning, your wonderful new pipe will become a soggy, ill-tasting mess, and will no longer provide you with the smoking pleasure you desire.

Tapered pipe cleaners, bristle pipe cleaners, regular or extra fluffy pipe cleaners, pipe sweetener or grain alcohol, Shank brush or cotton swab.

Some of the tips of cleaning smoking pipes are:--
'Clear the Pass hole the first step of cleaning a smoking pipe is clearing its pass hole. Run a clean pipe filter through the passage of the air pass hole. Toothpicks are being used to clean and clear the accumulated tobacco stuff, residual and tar present in it.
'Check properly the bowl of smoking pipe. Insure that the bowl is of proper size so that cleaning tool can be properly inserted.
'Add potable spirits or alcohol for cleaning process. Potable spirits or pipe solvent should be added to the interior of the bowl to dissolve tar and sterilize the pipe. A pipe cleaner dipped in this solution is advisable for cleaning the stem. Allow the pipe to dry.
'Put retort kit cover over top of the pipe with a wad of cotton, fill the glass bulb with alcohol, attach the rubber bulb to the pipe stem, and heat the bulb with a butane torch until it simmers and enters the pipe.
'Wait: You will want to wait for the warm alcohol to fill the pipe and remove the heat. The alcohol will recede, carrying all of the tar and accumulated matter. Repeat with the same fluid, as necessary.
'Finish: Use a clean pipe cleaner to check the airway and clean the rest of the pipe with a dry rag.

Wear eye protection, old clothes and gloves. Protect all surrounding surfaces. Alcohol removes stain from your pipe and may harm you, so be careful. Benefits: removes tar, nicotine, off tastes, sanitizes pipe and stem.

Fill the retort bulb with alcohol about 60- 65ml.Affix a connector to pipe. Put cloth over bowl top or cotton ball in chamber. Hold the pipe bowl higher than the retort bulb.Heat the alcohol. Boiling will force the alcohol into pipe bowl. Raising the bowl will get most fluid from the bowl.
